“ I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water.” –Ray Charles
I had pleasure of witnessing what some would say was the best beat battle in North Texas this year. Being that it’s only January the bar for any beat battle following what had taken place on January 10th has been set to an all time high. Tha Culture is known for putting on showcases that appeal to all music heads. From Hip Hop, Jazz ,Techno to Rap and R&B their events have a place for everyone. iStandard sponsored Tha Cultures: LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINATRY BEAT MAKERS showcase and as I stood in the shadows I watched the doors open and the city pour in. The competition opened up with Dallas’s very own music producer Sikwitit the newest iStandard Beast of the Beats champion alongside with B. Barber.
Quite naturally it was my first beat battle and I didn’t know what to expect. It wasn’t long before I had my hands in the air as I seen the crowd engaged as they looked on to some of the next hottest producers. During the rounds each contestant dropped all nerves and jammed to their own beat signifying that the beats came from the heart and soul.
The beat battle not only had some top notch contestants but whom better to judge than someone who has walked down the same road to reach success. Celebrity judges included Oktober1st, Dreamchild and King Logan who has produced records for Michael Jackson, Omarion and Rihanna. Now the list of contestants was nothing short of extraordinary. Battling out you seen: Mel Q, Gumbo Music, VohnBeatz, G.I., Larce, Kal Banx, Kartey and Daily Breed. Nevertheless, there could only be one winner.
During the competition there was times the crowd demanded for additional rounds when deciding who would advance to the next stages of the competition. In the end it was G.I. a high school music teacher and VohnBeatz the 17-year old son of Symbolyc One a known producer that has worked with artists such as Beyonce and Kanye West. The crowd cheered and in the end it was G.I. who walked away as the Champ of the League Of Extraordinary Beat makers showcase. Not only is G.I. the newest producer champ but he walked away with some incredible prizes that included a soundkit from iStandard to use when making his next set of beats. A Lifetime membership for iStandards site. A free slot into the next iStandard showcase and the Fireworks drum kit from producer Symbolyc One.
